Why dental care matters
More than just fresh breath.
By age three, most dogs and cats already show signs of dental disease. Left alone, dental disease can worsen and spread; but caught early, it's one of the most manageable parts of your pet's health.
Preventing the most common issue in dogs & cats
Dental disease is the #1 health issue in adult dogs and cats, and one of the most preventable with routine dental care.
Pet dental care benefits the whole body
Bacteria from infected gums can reach the heart, liver, and kidneys. Great oral health protects far more than the mouth.
Comfort they can't ask for
Pets can hide dental symptoms. Most parents only realize how sore their pet was once the dental pain is treated, and they perk back up.
Common pet dental problems
What cat & dog dental cleaning catches:
Dental disease in dogs and cats starts unseen, below the gumline. Here's what we look for and why it's worth catching early.
What we look for
In dogs & cats- Plaque & tartar buildup
- Gingivitis — inflamed, bleeding gums
- Periodontal (gum) disease
- Cavities & tooth decay
- Fractured, abscessed, or retained teeth
- Oral masses & growths
Why it's more than the mouth
The bigger pictureUntreated dental disease doesn't stay put. In advanced stages, the bacteria and inflammation can affect the rest of the body.
- Infection can travel to the heart, liver & kidneys
- Chronic mouth pain changes how pets eat and behave
- Caught early, treatment is simpler — and cheaper
The gold standard
Anesthetic teeth cleaning for dogs & cats
As the gold standard in veterinary dental care, anesthetic teeth cleanings for dogs and cats clean below the gumline and between the teeth, while the pet is kept comfortable and calm.

Anesthetic dental cleaning
- Calm and pain-free, monitored one-on-one throughout
- Cleans above AND below the gumline, where disease actually starts
- A thorough cleaning and polish that slows plaque from coming back
- Full-mouth digital X-rays catch hidden problems
- Performed by veterinary professionals
Awake cleaning
- High risk of accidental injury — from sudden head movements with dental tools in the mouth
- High stress and pain for dogs and cats
- Surface or cosmetic cleaning only — all above the gumline, not below
- No X-rays — so problems below get missed
- Not performed by veterinary professionals
What to expect
Cat & dog dental care, start to finish.
From your pet's dental consult to the actual teeth cleaning or procedure, here's an overview:
Dental consultation & bloodwork
Our vets examine your pet's mouth, run pre-anesthetic bloodwork, and give you a clear, upfront estimate before dental cleaning or other treatments are scheduled.
Drop-off & check in
Drop your pet off in the morning and we get them settled. After a quick physical exam, our team places them under anesthesia with continuous monitoring.
Stress-free teeth cleaning & dental X-rays
Thorough dental cleaning and dental exam, all in one. Our veterinary professionals use scalers to clean your pet's teeth, followed by polishing. Simultaneously, we do a full dental X-ray to spot any underlying issues.
Recovery & home
Your pet wakes up with one-on-one monitoring. Our team will let you know when they can be picked up. You head home the same day with simple aftercare notes.
Pricing
Premium pet dental care, minus the premium cost.
These prices are averages from real Sploot invoices for our standard cleaning (a level 1 dental). Your pet's tailored estimate may wiggle a bit depending on their age, size, and how their teeth are doing. More severe disease means a deeper clean and possible extractions, which can increase costs. Your vet will walk you through it all at the consultation.
Dog Dental
| Procedure only | Procedure + pre-op exam & bloodwork | |
|---|---|---|
| Without SplootPack | $1,000 | $1,280 |
| With SplootPack | $850 | $1,090 |
| Savings | $150 | $190 |
Both prices are averages from real Sploot invoices for a canine dental, not fixed prices. SplootPack members pay 15% less. Your estimate includes the exam, bloodwork, anesthesia and X-rays. Some clinics list X-rays and the office visit separately. Your vet confirms a tailored estimate after the pre-op exam, and it can be higher or lower depending on your pet’s size and what they need.
What's included?
The pre-op dental consult
This is needed before any dental procedure, whether it's teeth cleaning or treating a loose tooth. You get:
- A check-up to examine your pet's teeth, gums, and bite
- A pre-anesthetic physical exam and bloodwork to confirm they're ready
- A transparent, itemized estimate — before teeth cleaning or other dental treatments are booked
- Time to ask every question about the procedure and payment
Exam & bloodwork fees
Bloodwork cost varies with what your pet needs. SplootPack members save on the exam, bloodwork, and the procedure itself.
What's on the invoice
Where a dental bill comes from
A dental invoice is a handful of line items. Anesthesia and X-rays scale with your pet's size, and extractions only appear if the X-rays find a tooth that needs one.
Average line-item prices
Averages from real Sploot dental invoices, before any SplootPack discount. Your pet's estimate may be higher or lower.
Treatment as needed
Other dental procedures for dogs & cats
Sometimes the X-rays reveal a tooth that needs more than a cleaning. If they do, here's what treatment can involve.
Tooth extractions
For decay, fractured or loose teeth, retained baby teeth, or teeth too damaged to save: they're removed gently and painlessly, with the socket cared for afterwards.
Gingivectomy
Careful removal of diseased gum tissue to manage advanced periodontal disease and give healthy gums a chance to recover.
Oral mass removal
Diagnosis and removal of growths in the mouth, with tissue biopsy when needed, so we know exactly what we're dealing with.
You're always in the loop. If we find something that needs treatment during dental cleaning, we call you with the findings and cost during the procedure. Our team will not do anything beyond teeth cleaning without your opt-in.

Common questions
Cat & dog dental care FAQs, answered.
How often should my dog or cat get a dental cleaning?
Most dogs and cats benefit from a professional teeth cleaning about once a year, though it varies with breed, age, and other factors. Senior or older dogs and cats, small breeds, and flat-faced breeds may need teeth cleaning more often. Our veterinarians will provide a recommended dental cleaning schedule based on your pet's individual needs.
Why does my dog or cat need anesthesia for their dental cleaning?
The care that matters most happens below the gumline and between the teeth — places an awake pet won't tolerate. Anesthesia lets us clean thoroughly, take full-mouth X-rays, and treat problems without pain or stress. Your pet is monitored one-on-one the whole time.
Is anesthesia safe for my pet?
For the vast majority of pets, yes. We run pre-anesthetic bloodwork and an exam first, use modern monitoring throughout, and tailor the plan to your pet's age and health. We're happy to talk through any concerns at your consultation.
Can dogs and cats really get cavities?
Yes, dogs and cats can get cavities. It's one of the common dental problems we find. Acidic plaque wears down the enamel and creates decay, just like in people. However, the most common dental problem is still periodontal disease, a progressive gum infection that affects a large percentage of dogs and cats beyond the age of 3. Professional teeth cleaning for dogs and cats helps prevent dental issues, including periodontal disease and cavities, by removing disease-causing plaque.
How much does dental cleaning for dogs and cats cost?
You get one all-inclusive estimate up front, including the consultation, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, full cleaning and polish, and digital X-rays. Dog dentals average about $1,090 all-in for SplootPack members in Colorado, and cat dentals about $835 (use the pricing toggle in the pricing table above for Illinois and Utah rates). If X-rays reveal a tooth that needs treatment, we call you with the cost before doing anything.
What's the difference between anesthetic and awake teeth cleanings?
An awake (anesthesia-free) cleaning only provides cosmetic benefits; it can't reach below the gumline and does not include diagnostic dental X-rays. These procedures are also NOT done by licensed professionals, are stressful for dogs and cats, and have a high risk of physical injury from scalers and other dental tools.
On the other hand, anesthetic dental cleaning for cats and dogs cleans above AND below the gumline, while keeping pets comfortable. As the gold standard in veterinary dentistry, anesthetic teeth cleaning offers actual oral health benefits, which can range from early detection and treatment to halting or managing various stages of periodontal disease.
How will I know if my pet needs extractions?
We won't know for certain until your pet is under anesthesia and we can take the dental X-rays. Only then can we see hidden fractures, abscesses, and bone loss from periodontal disease. If a tooth is causing pain or cannot be saved, we will call you during the procedure and only proceed with your OK.
Can I just clean my pet's teeth at home instead?
At-home brushing is genuinely valuable and slows plaque between visits, but it can't remove tartar below the gumline or reach where disease develops (at the root). It works alongside a professional dental cleaning, not in place of one.
Does SplootPack apply to dental procedures?
Yes, members get 15% off all dental procedures, plus 3 free exam visits a year, and 10% off bloodwork, meds, and everything else.
For most dogs and cats, a single dental cleaning package (pre-op + procedure) offers savings nearly equivalent to the nominal annual fee of SplootPack. The membership pays for itself.
